My wife and I loved pretty much everything about this hotel. Unfortunately, every time we recall our stay in this hotel we always remember one rude and pompous staff - Adrian.
We booked directly on the hotel's website. Very happy about the price we paid for. The room was nice and spacious. It tries for that Florentine style which my wife loved. The room was service every day.
Location wise Hotel Donatello is great! It's about 12 minute walk from the main station. Five minute walk to a laundry mat which is very helpful especially if you are on a long European vacation. It's a 10 minute walk to the Academia (to see "David"). The hotel oversees Piaza Indepedenza. It's on the "cheaper" area of Florence, but you don't lose out in terms of access to the sites. If you don't like to walk, the bus stop is just near by.
Breakfast was a pleasant surprise! I've been to European hotels before and I didn't expect much from breakfast. Hotel Donatello offered a number of hams and salamis, beautiful pastries, your standard cereals, a few fruit juices and decent enough coffee. We found the breakfast staff extremely friendly and helpful. One in particular even gave us advise on getting to Sienna and San Gimigiano.
Watch out for the strict rules. These are posted in your room door. Things to note include you are forbidden to bring food and drink into your room. Yet, it seems ok if you pay for room service and have your food and drink delivered. Go figure! Also, you are not able to control the temperature in the room. I found the room can get too hot. So to cool down, I had to open the window a bit.
Everyone we dealt with in Hotel Donatello were just lovely. These guys are suited in the hospitality industry, except for one. We met the pompous Adrian on our first day. He asked for my booking name which I clearly replied. He then asked me if I was this person with an oriental name. I am oriental in appearance, but the name I gave him was more Italian than Oriental. I didn't think much of this at the time. But in hindsight, it seems that this guy already has made judgement on my wife and I base on our appearance. It was on our third night when we had an argument with him. My wife was having extreme stomach pains and requested for hot water to drink in our room. A request we thought was reasonable and were granted by other staff member the previous two nights. This guy simply refused this request. My wife tried to explain her pains, but he continued to refuse saying we cannot have ANY drinks at our room. However, if we were to buy tea or coffe from the bar, we can take it up. We explained we wanted just hot water, and he continued to say no. Frustrated, we ended up going back to our room fuming.
Apart from our dealings with Adrian, we loved this hotel.
